> Sichuan Earthquake Disaster Recovery Efforts –Call for Immediate Support

Current situation

Since May 12, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks have struck
Wenchuan County in China’s densely populated Sichuan Province, killing nearly 32,000
people, injuring more than 220,000 others, and leaving an estimated 40,000 missing or
buried under collapsed buildings, according to official Government of China (GOC)
estimates. The total death toll is expected to surpass 50,000.

The earthquake has affected more than 10 million people, causing massive displacement
and raising concerns about significant unmet humanitarian needs. Near the epicenter in
Wenchuan County, the earthquakes leveled more than 80% of the buildings. According to
the United Nations, the earthquake overwhelming affected children, more than 2 million
out of Sichuan’s 12 million children and their families living in the most damaged
prefectures. Recent statistics from the Sichuan Government state so far total of 4,807,200
people have been forced into “temporary shelter”.

The EarthRights School (ERS) - Mekong is a unique training programming for activists from the Mekong Region (Yunnan/China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) whose work focuses on environmental issues and human rights. The seven month-long training program uses experiential learning methods to equip participants from the region with skills required to conduct research, gather data, and effectively campaign around environmental issues affecting the region. The training will take place in Chiang Mai, Thailand from June to December of 2008. Housing, transportation, and a modest living stipend will be provided to successful candidates.
