The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD), at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, would like to inform you of the announcement of RCSD Visiting Scholarand Small Research Grants, for the year 2009. The fellowships aim to enhance the research capacity of those from the Mekong Region, by using social sciences tools to explore and understand changes, relationships and a broad range of subjects which include trans-border issues, resource management, ethnicity and cultural diversity, all in the context of regionalized development. The Fellowships also aim to enhance understanding, information sharing and mutual learning regarding emerging issues in the Mekong Region, all linked to a deeper and broader conceptual understanding and analysis.
The Visiting Scholar Fellowships will be granted to academics, researchers and Non-Government Organization (NGO) workers from countries in the Mekong Region, who would like to spend time in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary academic environment at RCSD, for a period of between three and six months. Fellows will be asked to write working papers based on their research projects and their respective areas of interest.
The Small Research Grants will provide the opportunity for interested people from both the academic and non-academic sectors, such as NGOs and the media, to conduct research in the areas of social science and sustainable development, focusing on the Mekong Region. Mid-career researchers, NGO workers, development practitioners and M.A and Ph.D. students who are pursuing their field research,are all eligible to apply for the research grants.
Both fellowships will be open to interested scholars, researchers, NGO and media workers from countries in the Mekong Region whose have citizenship of Thailand, or of a neighboring country in the area, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia or southwest China only. RCSD will provide support to the visiting scholars in the form of a monthly stipend, and will also cover other relevant costs, such as travel, health insurance, books and supplies. For the Small Research Grants, the grant will also include a monthly stipend, field research expenses and the costs of books and supplies. The deadline for applications is March 20, 2009.
