Current situation
Since May 12, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks have struck
Wenchuan County in China’s densely populated Sichuan Province, killing nearly 32,000
people, injuring more than 220,000 others, and leaving an estimated 40,000 missing or
buried under collapsed buildings, according to official Government of China (GOC)
estimates. The total death toll is expected to surpass 50,000.
The earthquake has affected more than 10 million people, causing massive displacement
and raising concerns about significant unmet humanitarian needs. Near the epicenter in
Wenchuan County, the earthquakes leveled more than 80% of the buildings. According to
the United Nations, the earthquake overwhelming affected children, more than 2 million
out of Sichuan’s 12 million children and their families living in the most damaged
prefectures. Recent statistics from the Sichuan Government state so far total of 4,807,200
people have been forced into “temporary shelter”.
Rebuilding Lives
Relief agencies cite interim and longer term earthquake resistant shelter as one of the
critical humanitarian needs required for successful relief, recovery, and reconstruction
efforts. Therefore, The Mountain Institute will draw upon its more than 20 years of
experience working in China: specialty in earthquake resistant, environmentally friendly,
low cost, rapid response building technology; expertise in reconstruction planning
approaches and methodologies; and, established Sichuan Field office, staff, and Chinese
government partner resources to provide critically needed humanitarian relief to the most
seriously affected communities who experienced an earthquake intensity of 9-10 on the
MMI Earthquake Intensity Scale.
Please join in assisting The Mountain Institute rebuild the futures of these communities by
providing the funding needed to help the almost 5 million people forced from their homes.
Help The Mountain Institute help them find shelter and lay a foundation from which they
can rebuild a future for themselves and their families as well as home to return to while
they do it. Several thousands of villages and many schools have been destroyed due to the
earthquake. We want to build and to send out as many TMI’s Fastblock machines as we
can to those villages and schools. $12000 donation will cover the cost of one Fastblock
machine and training people to operate. Please give what you can. More funding will help
The Mountain Institute reach more families; even the smallest amount will foster hope in
devastation and confidence in a better tomorrow for those desperately wondering how to
move forward.
