Established in 1991, The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a corps of active global citizens for Singapore, through active international volunteering and networking. Its programmes include Singapore Volunteers Overseas, Singapore Executive Expedition, Friends of Singapore and Overseas Singaporeans. SIF has been presented the Excellence for Singapore Award.
SIF’s links with China were established in 1993 when it sent the first Singapore Volunteers Overseas (SVO) Specialist Team (Ophthalmology) to train local practitioners in cataract surgery techniques and help set up an intra-ocular implant training center in Xiamen. In 2000, the Youth Expedition Project (YEP) was extended to China with four expeditions. A total of 1,466 youths, led by 44 youth leaders, took part in 59 YEP community service initiatives in China between May 2000 and December 2004. Many of the youth expeditions included English language instruction, the construction of community facilities, and health and environmental conservation education.
In 1998, SIF hosted Mr Zhu Xiaohua, the Chairman of China Everbright Group for a visit to Singapore under the Distinguished Visitors Programme. And in 2004, four Singaporean and four Chinese young professionals had the opportunity to work in each other’s country for eight weeks under the Singapore-China Young Business Ambassador Programme.
SIF keeps in touch with Singaporeans working, studying and living in China through the 18 Overseas Singapore Clubs (OSC). In 2004, SIF also worked with the Shanghai Singapore Business Association, (an OSC in Shanghai) to organize the 4th SIF Overseas Conference. The conference engaged hundreds of overseas Singaporeans and local Chinese in an exchange of ideas on issues concerning them and the region. Issues include entrepreneurship, business opportunities, cross-border ties and international affairs. Participants were given the opportunity to learn about the host country’s business, culture and way of life.
SIF’s current annual income is approximately USD 6 million. Most of this comes in subventions from the government of Singapore, but the foundation also receives donations from corporations and individuals.
