The Smile Train, an international children’s charity founded in 1999, is the world’s leading organization dedicated to helping the millions of children suffering from cleft lip and palate.
Rather than send visiting medical teams to developing countries, The Smile Train empowers local doctors and medical professionals to help the children of their communities. Its comprehensive approach involves free surgery for children, free training for doctors, and research devoted to finding a cure. One hundred percent of donations to The Smile Train are allocated to help children – nothing goes to administrative overhead.
With The Smile Train’s help, local doctors provide free surgeries for poor children every day, at an average cost-per-surgery of $250. To date, that has meant more than 130,000 free surgeries for children in just six years. By virtue of its more than 217 partner hospitals and partnerships in 56 countries, The Smile Train plans to treat 42,000 this year.
In China, The Smile Train has helped over 72,000 children through its partnership with the China Charity Federation and more than 125 hospitals located in every province of the country. Over 2000 Chinese medical professionals are now able to provide progressively higher quality care because of the free training they have received from The Smile Train.
The Smile Train leverages the latest in Internet tools, database software, interactive CD's and laptop technology to train doctors in developing countries about current breakthroughs in cleft care. This emphasis on technology – a founding principle of The Smile Train – has enabled the organization to introduce several medical-industry “firsts,” including:
- The world’s first Virtual Surgery Training Videos – a set of CDs helping doctors in the world’s poorest regions learn advanced cleft surgical techniques from the foremost experts in the field – on their own computers and at no cost.
- “The Smile Train Express”, the world’s first online cleft patient record database. Patient charts are uploaded via the Web and processed electronically, making it easier for doctors to manage and monitor a large volume of patients.
- The world’s largest Online Cleft Library, which, for the first time ever, enables medical practitioners and the public to access a comprehensive collection of information about cleft lip and palate.
The Smile Train was founded by Brian Mullaney, The Smile Train’s President; Charles B. Wang, Chairman and Founder of Computer Associates and Chairman of The Smile Train; and Ann Ziff of Ziff Brothers Investments.
