Retina Hong Kong was founded in 1995 by a group of Hong Kong citizens who suffer from inherited and incurable diseases of the retina that lead to blindness. This is a self-help and mutual support group that promotes understanding of retinal eye disease, gathers and publishes information about in Chinese, and helps people with the disease adapt to their changed circumstances as it progresses.

The organisation aims to serve as ‘a bridge between people with inherited retinal degenerative disease in Hong Kong, the Mainland and other Chinese communities all over the world.’ As such, it makes its Chinese language publications available to medical practitioners, optometrists and researchers on the mainland and has organised joint seminars and forums with them.

Retina Hong Kong is a member of Retina International, a grouping of 32 national retinal disease organisations with a secretariat in Switzerland.

This organization's funding comes from membership fees, private donations and Hong Kong government grants.
