The Association began in 1959 as a self-help club for people in Hong Kong who had suffered from psychiatric disorders. It has grown into a large service ogranisation that manages a wide range of support services for people suffering or recovering from mental illness or handicap.

Since 1998 the Association has hosted All China Disabled Persons’ Federation staff on study visits to Hong Kong to observe New Life facilities and attend training courses. Psychiatric nurses and Public Security Bureau staff have also participated in these exchange activities.

New Life staff have given workshops on the mainland for senior government officials, managers of mental health care facilities and mental health practitioners.

The Association’s work in Hong Kong is funded by subventions from the Hong Kong government, grants from the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Hong Kong Community Chest, fees for services, and private donations.
