The Lions Club (LION stands for 'Liberty, Intelligence and Our Nation's Safety) was founded in 1917 as a service organisation by a group of American businessmen. At a 1925 International Convention, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be 'knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness'. Since, Lions Clubs, with over 1.5 million members in 185 countries, have supported services to blind and visually impaired people.
In 1990, Lions established SightFirst, a USD 140 million global initiative to eradicate preventable and reversible blindness. In 1993, Lions Clubs initiated their first 'SightFirst Action for China' with USD 620,000 for over 25,000 cataract operations. In 1997, a further USD 15 million was set aside to fund the 'SightFirst China Action' programme.
