In 1999, four international development agencies attached to the German Protestant church came together to form this new international service organisation. One of the founding members, Evangelische Zentralstelle fuer Entwicklungshilfe (EZE), had already been supporting work in China for more than ten years.
EED serves mainly as as a funding agency. It provides grants for projects, run by local partners, that emphasise human and community development, and try to combinate poverty reduction with enviornmental rehabilitation. EED also attaches great importance to community participation and self-help.
The first project supported in China (through EZE) was a water, sanitation and irrigation programme carried out by the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchange (CICETE). EED continues to support the work of the China Association of NGO Cooperation (CANGO) which grew out of CICETE.
From 1987, cooperation started with the Nanjing-based Amity Foundation, which has been a major partner ever since.
Other early partners were the Institute for Rural Development at the People’s University, and the Centre for Integrated Agricultural Development (CIAD) at Beijing Agricultural University. EED continues to cooperate with both institutes. (CIAD has grown very substantially, over the last decade; it was later renamed the College of Rural Development and has since become the College of Humanities and Development.)
EED receives funds from German Protestant churches, and from the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.
