Established in 1997 by a British woman, this organisation works exclusively in rural Sichuan. It has implemented poverty alleviation projects in 21 officially designated ‘Particularly Poor Villages’ (特困村) of Hanyuan County, Ya’an Prefecture and Ganluo County. Liangshan Yi Minority Prefecture. The organization works closely with communities to find out what assistance they need to improve their livelihoods. Community development projects are based at village level. In each village, a number of components are implemented over several years depending on specific needs and requirements of the communities.

DORS provides training in agroforestry and funding for purchase of saplings by poor households. It also works with farmers on community forestry projects and the development of alternative crops for environmental protection and income generation.

Numerous water supplies have also been constructed, along with other, occasional basic infrastructure such as the building of bridges.

As a part of a concerted effort to focus on the involvement of women in rural development, DORS has implemented a women's credit scheme. Loans ranging from RMB 800 to RMB 3000, repayable at two six month intervals, were made to 950 women in 7 villages for income generating activities. This also included training. In addition, school fees have been paid in full or part on behalf or more than two thousand children, with priority given to girls and Yi minority children.

In future, DORS will consider expanding its projects to new villages in nearby townships. It will also begin to assist poor villages in writing and submitting proposals for further project funding. It will provide study tour and training opportunities to NGOs or other parties involved in community development

DORS is registered as a charitable organization in the UK. Its funding comes from individual contributions and from grants made by foundations and foreign government donors.
