The President of the Rokpa International is Dr Akong Tulku, a Tibetan Rinpoche from Qinghai Province who relocated to Great Britain in 1963 and established a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Scotland. Since making a return visit to his homeland in 1986, Akong Tulku has mobilized funding for a wide range of community development projects in Tibetan areas of Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan and Gansu as well as in the Tibet Autonomos Region. ‘Rokpa’ means ‘to help’ and ‘to serve’ in Tibetan.
Rokpa projects are typically small scale, costing less than USD 10,000, and are led by networks of local Tibetan community leaders. Past work has included providing funds for small business expansion, supporting schools, tree nurseries, environmental education projects, financial assistance to the elderly and sick, and medical training for health workers and doctors are the kinds of projects Rokpa has supported.
Funds for Rokpa’s work are raised by thirteen branches in 12 Western countries, spearheaded by Rokpa International in Switzerland. In 2002, Rokpa International reported a total income for the year of USD 2,200,000 Donations come from private individuals, businesses, and community leaders. In the past, some Rokpa projects have received grant funding from the British government’s Department for International Development.
