Initiative Development, established in Poitiers in 1994, describes itself as a mutual self-help NGO. It works in developing countries focusing on raising incomes in poor communities. Globally, its programmes cover hygiene, HIV/AIDS, education, drinking water and construction of school buildings with activities spanning interventions such as micro-finance, vocational training and supporting the establishment of mutual self-help groups.
ID currently has a total of 22 paid staff based overseas and in its Poitiers headquarters and a further 500 volunteers. Cumulatively, they are delivering more than 20 projects across six countries with 250,000 beneficiaries.
An exploratory mission arrived in China in 2000 and has subsequently established an operational base in Weining Autonomous County in the far west of Guizhou through its main institutional partner the Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau. Implementation partners include the Guizhou PRA Network, who have provided consultation services and technical assistance to ID, and the Water Conservation Bureau.
Since 2003 ID has been delivering a water access and quality project in hamlets across Caohai Nature Reserve, and the Prefectures of Mazha and Dajie where the majority of the local population is Yi, Miao or Hui. Work has mainly comprised well construction, community-based trainings in management and water hygiene but also includes a water storage and improved sanitation component at a local primary school.
The programme expects, during 2005, to continue with well and latrine construction, improving water collection and storage facilities
Funding comes mainly from public source, including the EU, the French Government’s Department for International Development, UNICEF, WHO, World Bank and various private Foundations. Projects in China are currently funded by the Association of the Brothers of our Brothers (Swiss), the Lord Michelham of Hellingly Foundation (Swiss) and the SIGMA Foundation (French.)
