Established in 1987 and based in Hong Kong, Friends of China Foundation (FOC) at first served mainly to recruit and place English teachers in Chinese Universities. It has since expanded its support for education by supplying teachers for other subjects and by organising training programmes for middle and high school English teachers. In addition, the foundation has begun to bring medical professionals to China for long and short-term professional exchange and cooperation projects with local health authorities. In recent years FOC has also funded the building and equipping of schools and clinics, and engaged in rural development projects to improve health and sanitation.

People from 15 different countries of Europe, North America, Asia and Australia have come to work in China under FOC’s auspices. The organisation believes in the contribution of individuals who are prepared to make a long term commitment to working in China and, to this end, helps to arrange language study for such people to achieve proficiency in Mandarin and ethnic minority languages.

FOC has representative offices in Chengdu (Sichuan), Xining (Qinghai) and Xi’an (Shaanxi). The organization hopes to continue increasing the scope of expertise it can bring to China, recruit actively for qualified professionals in various fields

FOC is funded by donations from private individuals overseas
