During 25 years work in China, the Asia Foundation has provided over USD 50 million for research, overseas exchanges and educational materials to support the work of Chinese principals in government, academia and community institutions. Its yearly China programme budget has grown five-fold over this period.
Recent and ongoing efforts concentrate on four main areas: 1) Supporting access to legal aid and services. Grants have been made to numerous national, provincial legal aid centers for staff training, pilot services and expanded legal aid operations. 2) Promoting local government reform. Funding has been provided for a number of studies, including an applied research project on local government administrative reform and conflict prevention in rural China (Shandong, Shanxi). Support has also been given for legal training and materials for village leaders. 3) Encouraging the growth of China’s non profit sector. In addition to funding past research by the Tsinghua University NGO Research Centre, the Foundation has support two series of ‘NPO Forums’ hosted by the NPO Network. 4) Improving the protection of women’s rights. This has included a range of projects to provide legal counseling, worker education, and health services to migrant women workers in the Pearl Delta region.
As one of its many new initiatives The Foundation will be focusing more on labor issues, empowering workers to protect their rights and improving workplace conditions. This will include legal aid and rights awareness training for workers, training for managers, labour union and Labour Bureau officials.
One of the Foundation’s longest running activities is a Books for Asia programme that has been operating in China since 1980. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and via a distribution centre in Shanghai, the Foundation each year supplies close to 200,000 textbooks and research materials to more than 1,000 colleges and universities in China.
The Asia Foundation has been partnering with nongovernmental organizations, universities, government agencies and research centers across the Asia Pacific region since 1954. It now has 17 offices in Asia and funds regional and country level projects.
The Foundation receives an annual appropriation from the US Congress, as well as donations from private individuals and corporations and grants from foundations, government and multilateral agencies.
