Misereor – whose name is derived from the Latin for ‘compassion’ – was established in 1958 as the overseas development agency of the Catholic church in Germany. It works mainly by making grants to local partners in developing countries, emphasising the principle of self-help and the importance of beneficiaries ‘shaping themselves all development processes and projects affecting them’. In addition, through a range of public information campaigns in Germany, Misereor works to increase knowledge and understanding – among both policymakers and the general public – of the needs and interests of the poor in developing countries.

Misereor has supported work in China since the 1980s, when it began to make funds available for projects identified by Caritas Hong Kong. (See separate entry) Since then, Misereor has begun to directly fund a wide range of work in community development and social welfare.

Recently supported work includes:

A collaboration between Beijing University and Hong Kong Polytechnic to create a professional training programme for social workers. This has included faculty development, capacity building and curriculum development.

An HIV/AIDS education and prevention programme in Xi’an

A skills training programme in Southern Yunnan that has used peer education methods to spread new agricultural techniques among farmers.

Misereor raises funds from Catholics and the general public in Germany, but also receives public funding support from the government and grants from the Catholic Church. In 1999, Misereor contributed a total of around EUR 140 million to overseas development projects.
