HOPE International (HOPE) is a global, faith-based, non-profit organization focused on poverty alleviation through microenterprise development. HOPE was founded in 1997, establishing its first office in Ukraine to provide a “hand up” rather than a “hand out”—development services that create opportunity for individuals and communities rather than dependency on the giver.

HOPE’s vision is to enable sustainable economic development that results in significant and lasting change, temporal and eternal, in the lives of many people living in poverty. HOPE now works in nine countries: Afghanistan, China, the Dominican Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Moldova, Russia, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine.

HOPE International expanded to China in 2000, opening its first office in Hebei province in the city of Zhangjiakou. As of April 2006, HOPE China has eight offices in Hebei and two in Shanxi province. Located primarily in urban areas, these offices provide business capital to entrepreneurs who lack access to formal financial services. Loans average CNY 4,500, repayable over 90 days. Many such small entrepreneurs have borrowed repeatedly through the HOPE China program until their businesses expand enough to gain access to formal credit.

As part of an initiative to reach communities and individuals living in deeper poverty, HOPE China is currently focusing on designing microcredit products for rural markets. The goal is to provide families with capital to support animal husbandry and start-up enterprises that augment their income from seasonal agriculture.

Hope International’s income comes from grants and private donations (individuals, churches, and foundations). HOPE China’s operational costs are covered through income from the microfinance activity; funds from HOPE International and other sources are invested in the loan portfolio and geographic expansion.
