China AIDS Info was founded in 2003 in Hong Kong as an independent, non-profit group and has recently been approved as a “charity” in Hong Kong.
Its basic objective is to improve access to information about HIV/AIDS in China. This is supported by work to develop a network of journalists, translators, civil society workers and people living with HIV/AIDS to gather, translate and disseminate information about the AIDS epidemic from the Chinese press.
Translations of the latest news, covering general news, treatment, prevention and law, are posted on the China AIDS Info website. The site also provides events listings, links and access to a database of HIV/AIDS-related orgs that includes listings of multi-lateral and bi-lateral organizations as well as NGOs. Electronic resources are complemented with a newsletter, which hopes to become quarterly, providing more in-depth analysis on the pandemic. China AIDS Info prints and maintains a directory of NGOs working on HIV/AIDS in China.
China AIDS Info also provides a networking opportunities for local NGOs organizing events for enthusiasts, advice to local non-government and government organizations in areas such as funding, preparation of information and guidelines and helping individual HIV/AIDS patients to receive medical care and advice.
Following the example of the MSF clinic in Nanjing, China Aids Info is launching a project to train people with HIV/AIDS to work as treatment education and adherence counselors inside government-run anti-retroviral(ARV) therapy programmes in Guangxi. If successful, it is hoped to jumpstart expansion across Guangxi and lead to scaling-up to other provinces.
They have been working with PHA (People Living with HIV/AIDS) to advocate more affordable treatment access and lobby pharmaceutical companies to lower ARVs in China.
To sustain operations the organization relies heavily on voluntary inputs. There is only one paid member of staff, although there are hopes to attract funding and employ staff more formally.
In 2005 China AIDS Info received about $40,000 US from Johnson & Johnson and the Collaborative Fond (which is implemented by the Tide Foundation) for general funding.
