MSF started working in Hong Kong in 1988 during the height of an influx of Vietnamese refugees (‘boat people’). It provided medical services in refugee camps until all the refugees were resettled or repatriated in early 1998.
In 1994 MSF established an office in Hong Kong, to promote the organisation’s values, to recruits voluntary aid workers and to raises funds for MSF projects overseas.
In 2002, MSF Hong Kong funded projects in 47 countries, including support for MSF Belgium’s HIV/AIDS work in Xiangfan, Hubei.
The MSF Hong Kong website makes MSF’s international campaigns and activities accessible to a Chinese readership.
In 2002, MSF Hong Kong’s total income was HKD 61 million (EUR 7 million). Of this, 96% was donated by the general public in Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong government provided a further 2.6% in grant funding.
