The Foundation was established in 1985 and is registered as a charitable organisation in the UK.

Current projects within China are concentrated in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures of Ganzi, in Sichuan Province, and Yushu, in Qinghai. These have included support for equipping and refurbishing schools and for building bridges and clinics.

The Foundation has a particularly close relationship with the extremely remote
Sershul (Shiqu, 石渠) County, which lies within Ganzi Prefecture close to Sichuan’s border with Qinghai and the TAR. The Foundation donated around USD 300,000 for replacing livestock killed in the county during heavy snows in 1995/6. Since then it has developed a county-wide health care programme that receives co-funding from the European Union.

The Foundation is supported by donations from individuals. The European Union has co-funded work in Ganzi
