A British doctor who had spent many years working overseas, notably in the Himalayan region, established this organisation in 1999. ‘Kunde’ means ‘health and well being for all’ in Tibetan.

So far, KunDe has worked on health support and community development programmes in Lhoka (Shannan) Prefecture of the Tibet Autonomous region. These have included building and equipping rural clinics, and providing six-month in-service training courses for village and township doctors and health workers. KunDe has developed Chinese and Tibetan language health training materials suitable for local health workers, and health education materials suitable for local communities. The foundation has also provided orthopaedic devices and helped to adapt agricultural implements for people with disabilities in the communities where it works.

In its engagement with local communities, KunDe has progressively integrated measures to improve nutrition, agriculture and forestry into health promotion work. It is now planning to embark on integrated community development projects, while also scaling up its health sector work to Regional level.

The Kunde Foundation is funded by private donations and grants form private foundations.
