This organisation brings together around 100 volunteers dedicated to the preservation of marine life. In Hong Kong they conduct surveys of marine habitats and the threats caused to them by coastal pollution, carry out environmental impact assessments and hold an annual ‘Ocean for our Children’ exhibition. Their work has been instrumental in persuading the Hong Kong government to adopt several regulations regarding sewage and waste disposal, and fishing practices.

In 1996 the State Ocean Administration invited the Society to investigate whether or not there were any Dugong left in the seas of Guangxi. In 1998 the society was invited again to survey coral reefs in Guangxi coastal waters to determine which islands should be closed to tourists. The society’s proposals contributed to ending coral trade in that area. In Hainan, the society continues to perform annual coral surveys.

The society has also collaborated with the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography to research the distribution and population dynamics of the Chinese White Dolphin in the Pearl River Delta region. It has helped the Guangdong Sea Turtle Marine Research Centre with research and with publicity for the Center’s work.

Other joint research projects have included studies of spotted seals in Bohai and of Mink Whales in the North Yellow Sea.

The Marine Conservation Society is funded by membership fees and donations.
