Green Korea United (GKU) was established in 1991 with the philosophy of promoting awareness and the development of environmental issues on the Korean peninsula. They have organized a number of events, rallies and educational programs to promote these ends. Today GKU has nearly 40 workers and 15,000 members.

In 1999 they started the “Buy Nothing Day”(November 26th) and “No Paper Day”(April 4th). They are working to build environmental education programs in all schools. GKU has chosen a “rescue frog” as the mascot for its global warming campaign. They also publish an environmental newsletter.

In China, GKU promotes a Northeast Asian network of peaceful ecological operations. They support prolonged operations and projects in the Korean ethnic minority autonomous region, Yanbian, near the Tu Men River and Chang Bai Mountain. They promote studies and widespread boycotts of the China-Korean illegal Panda products trade. GKU is presently developing a united organization to protect the marine biology of the Pacific Ocean. Specifically, protecting the striped seal in Bo Hai and the Yellow Sea. Among their continuing goals is the further advancement of cooperation between Chinese and Korean NGO’s.

Green Korea United’s funding comes primarily from members, business contributors, Pacific Environment and Global Greengrants Fund.
