Global Green Grants Fund
Mission: "To strengthen the grassroots environmental movement in developing regions by making small grants to groups striving for environmental sustainability." In China since: 1998
Annual China budget: $50,000
Number of staff: 1 national
Mainland China contact: 2840 Wilderness Place, Suite A Boulder, CO, 80301 USA
Activities in Other Countries: Around 60 countries worldwide
This Fund makes small (typically USD 500 to 5,000) to grassroots groups working to help people protect the environment, live sustainably, and preserve biodiversity. The scale of grants is intentionally small. The Fund aims to serve as a bridge between large donor organisations (which often find it hard to identify and support small, grassroots organizations) and new, or small groups that can make cost-effective use of a small amount of money.
To identify prospective grantees, Global Greengrants relies on a network of nearly a hundred local volunteer advisors around the world. These advisors include journalists, educators and other professionals and activist leaders who are well acquainted with the environment movement and community in their own countries. The advisor network also helps create simple procedures that streamline grant delivery and minimise overhead costs.
Since 2001, Global Greengrants has made more than 1,500 grants in 73 countries. In China the Fund works through a local Advisory Board and supports a range of projects, including sustainable development, education, habitat protection, environmental journalism, research, networking, and student activism.
Global Greengrants fund was originally established in 1993 by an environmental activist, Chet Tchoweski, who had previously worked with the American Friends Service Committee and Greenpeace (see separate entries). At first, the Fund operated within the San Francisco based Tides Foundation, which itself was established in 1976 with the mission of strengthening community-based non-profit organisations. The Global Greentgrants Fund was established as an independent organisation in 2001.
Global Greengrants Fund is primarily funded by grants from private foundations in the United States. It also receives donations from some individual supporters.
