Established in 1978 this is one of the United States' largest foundations, and currently makes grants totaling some USD 170 million each year. The Foundation does not have individual programmes for countries overseas, but makes grants under a Program on Global Security and Sustainability, which itself focuses on arms control and security, environmental sustainability and population. The Foundation makes grants both to individuals and to institutions.
In China, the Foundation has for a number of years supported research institutions involved in biodiversity conservation and community development.
