Jane Goodall’s scientific studies of chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in Tanzania, starting in 1960, fundamentally changed human perceptions of ape behaviour and brought her lasting fame as a scientist, public educator and conservation advocate. In 1977 she founded the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation, now headquartered in Washington DC. This supports further research into primates, works to conserve chimpanzee habitats in Africa, and promotes public education and conservation efforts worldwide.

Ms. Goodall helped to establish a ‘Roots and Shoots’ club for local schoolchildren in Tanzania in 1991. This has since grown to a network of around 2,000 clubs for children and young people in 87 countries worldwide.

From 2000, the Jane Goodall Institute began to create Roots and Shoots clubs in China. Regional offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sichuan and Taiwan each serve around 200 local group groups. These encourage youngsters to become involved in their communities by organising activities such as tree planting and neighbourhood clean-ups. Some groups also raise funds for conservation. The regional offices organize annual ‘train the trainer’ courses for local groups, and special events such as film festivals, lectures, and animal welfare trainings.

The Sichuan office is also helping to implement RARE’s (瑞尔中心) Pride Campaign, in cooperation with Conservation International (See separate entries).

The Roots and Shoots programme in China has received funding support from Shell. Chevron-Texaco, the Western Academy of Beijing, and individual donors.
