Founded in 1990 as a corporate foundation in Taipei, and as such seeks to bring a tradition of entrepreneurship and sound financial management to their philanthropic activities. The Himalaya Foundation chooses projects that draw upon important facets of the Chinese experience to address issues faced by people around the world. Rather than duplicate the efforts of larger foundations, they channel their resources to areas they feel have not been fully serviced and issues yet to be popularly embraced or have been ineffectively addressed.
The Foundation’s Mainland programme has mainly been in the areas of academic exchange through their partners the Current Foundation, but also includes support for health care, the NGO research centre at Qinghua University, and a number of other cultural projects
