The Beijing office, which opened in 1985, exists to provide logistical and communications support to exchange and fellowship programmes that link American and Chinese scholars.

Past projects have included support for research grants and visiting scholar exchange programmes in Chinese public policy, law, sustainable environments, international affairs, and the humanities.

The Committee currently facilitates a fellowship program for Chinese social science and humanities scholars to carry out up to one year’s research in the United States, at the invitation of a US academic institution. It also provides logistical support for a competitive grants programme that allows American humanities scholars to spend 4-12 months on research visits to China.

The Committee is funded by the United States founding members, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Academy of Sciences and the Social Science Research Council
