China has so far been the main beneficiary of Bridge to Asia’s programme to donate foreign language books and academic journals to universities and libraries. During the past 16 years, over six million books have been sent to more than 500 educational institutions. According to the Chinese Ministry of Education, over the last five years this programme has supplied between one half and three quarters of foreign language books acquired by Chinese university libraries.
The emphasis to date has been on fields of study that, in the Foundation’s view, are critical to development. These include law, medicine, education, agriculture, science and engineering, economics, finance and business.
In recent years, the programme has also demonstrated applications of information technology for doocument delivery and research services, including the first China-U.S. telemedical exchange via the Internet in real time.
A recent grant from the Henry Luce Foundation is being used to launch a project to provide core collections of new books and journals in 25 fields for a network of key universities. An expanded website will give receiving institutions the opportunity to list their needs for foreign language books, which international donors will be encouraged to supply. In future, the Bridge Website will solicit support for scholarships for students who have passed university entrance exams but cannot afford the fees.
The Bridge to Asia programme, which started in China, now also extends to Vietnam.
As well as many individual donors of books and funds, Bridge to Asia has received support from numerous American foundations including, notably, the Freeman Foundation, Henry Luce Foundation, C.V. Starr Foundation, A T &T Foundation, Albert Kunstadter Family Foundation, and from many US based corporations such as the Nebraska Book Company, Follett Higher Education Group, Sun Microsystems, Apple, and Chevron.
