In 1922, three Christian universities in China established a joint office in New York. By 1949, this ‘United Board’ provided support to thirteen prestigious Chinese universities. Contact with China ceased in 1951, whereupon the United Board provided support for higher education in other parts of Asia, from Hong Kong to India. The Board was invited to return to China in 1980. In 2001, the Asian Christian Higher Education Institute, the United Board's program office, was opened in Hong Kong.

The United Board's current priorities are support for 1) faculty and leadership development, and 2) intra-Asian linkages and networks. The United Board provides Chinese colleges and universities with grants for faculty training. Priority is given to teacher training colleges in less-developed western and central regions. Currently, there is a focus on teacher training institutions in Guizhou province. Support includes scholarships for MA and Ph.D. study to enroll in graduate programs at major universities in China, and at graduate programs at major universities in Thailand and the Philippines. Many of the programs in Guizhou are administered by the Amity Foundation.

At major universities in China, many United Board grants support faculty development in the field of Religious Studies, but this is not an exclusive focus. Training of mid-level faculty from a variety of disciplines for future positions of leadership is provided via the United Board Fellows Program, which provides two semesters of mentored leadership training and international exposure, with one semester spent at a host university in Asia, and one semester in the U.S.

In the year ending June 30, 2003, UBCHEA’s total expenditure was around USD 8 million. Nearly USD 6 million of this was from the Board’s endowed funds. This was supplemented by private donations, grants from private foundations, and grants from the US government.
