Activities in Other Countries: Modest support for projects implemented by other members of the International Save the Children Alliance
Save the Children Hong Kong grew out of a fundraising operation previously run in Hong Kong by Save the Children UK (See separate entry). In 1996, when SC UK moved its China programme office to the China mainland, SC Hong Kong was established as an independent organisation and was formally accepted as a full member of the International Save the Children Alliance in 2002.
During the first few years of its life, SC Hong Kong acted mainly as a grant making organisation, funding work implemented by other organisations. It has since begun to employ programme staff to implement its own projects, but its role on the Chinese mainland remains largely that of a donor to projects implemented by others.
In the Special Administrative Region, SC Hong Kong supports work to rehabilitate young prisoners and a programme to help children in families affected by domestic violence. It also organises outings, parties and a summer ‘mini university’ for children from disadvantaged families and, with sponsorship from Nike and Yue Yuen Holdings, holds basketball trainings and tournaments for young people.
On the mainland, SC Hong Kong has supported disaster relief and basic education programmes. It has funded the construction (or rehabilitation) of 24 primary schools, the great majority in western provinces, as well as supplying books, teaching materials and scholarships for children from poor families. In addition, in 2002 a special education school was built in Baise, Guangxi, with funds from a private donor in Hong Kong. The project included provision of a resource center, library materials and teaching equipment and teacher training.
Recently, it has been moving towards ‘comprehensive’ educational programmes that also include teacher training and educational research. This approach has been tested in Qinghai where two primary schools were rebuilt and equipped, teachers were trained and Tibetan education materials were compiled. Another recent innovation is integrating health and hygiene facilities and trainings into schools that receive assistance. In future SC Hong Kong hopes to equip schools with a simple clinic, train health workers to staff it and provide health and hygiene education for children and their parents.
