Holt International Children’s Services was founded in 1959 by an American couple who adopted eight Korean War orphans in addition to their own six children. This non- profit organization has since become the world’s largest inter-country adoption agency.

In past years, Holt has helped approximately 3,000 American families to adopt Chinese children from China. In addition to facilitating adoptions, Holt China Children’s Services cooperates with orphanages to improve care for the children who remain there. The organization has run foster care projects in Nanchang (Jiangxi), Nanning, Guiping, Guigang, Liuzhou (Guangxi), Fuzhou (Fujian), Zhanjiang, Guangzhou (Guangdong), Meihekou, and Yanji (Jilin), Lanzhou (Gansu). These foster programs provide both short-term childcare and long-term care for children with disabilities. Holt has also trained orphanage staff and provided nutritional, educational and medical support for orphans, including corrective surgeries.

Furthermore, Holt provides medical, financial and other supports to help orphanage children with special needs.

Holt International’s funding comes mainly from fees charged for adoption services
