The Young Men’s Christian Association was originally founded in London, Great Britain, in 1844. At that time, during England’s industrial revolution, many young men were – as in China now – moving from rural communities into cities to work in factories. The YMCA’s founders felt that these young men, uprooted from their original communities, were vulnerable to alcohol and opium abuse, gambling, crime and prostitution. The organisation set out to provide educational opportunities such as literacy classes, (in an era when there was no state funded schooling), together with social and recreational facilities in a healthy, moral environment. The movement rapidly grew, adding branches in many cities, and spread to the United States. There, many local chapters established dormitories and hostels where young working men could stay in modest accommodation at affordable prices. Today, YMCA hostels continue to provide budget accommodation in many parts of the world.
The Hong Kong YMCA was established in 1901, and had close links with the YMCA branches established at much the same time in Shanghai and other mainland cities. Following ‘reform and opening,’ the mainland branches of the YMCA became active again, and several overseas members of the ‘Y’ family renewed training and exchange programmes with their Chinese counterparts.
Since 1992, the Hong Kong YMCA and mainland branches have cooperated in a series of programmes in which young people from Hong Kong and the mainland together organise summer camps for children, including sports and recreational activities along with environmental education, handicrafts and reading.
The YMCA of Hong Kong’s income derives mainly from hotels that it runs in the Special Administrative Region and from members contributions.
