Since its founding in 1992, this US based relief and development agency has worked in over 100 countries, distributing aid valued at more than USD 300 million through shipments of medicine, first aid supplies, food and other products.
When it opened an office in Sichuan in 1997, Heart to Heart delivered over USD 15 million worth of medical aid through shipments of medicines and medical supplies, as well as in surgeries and training delivered by US volunteer health professionals.
More recently, Heart to Heart has been working on a neonatal resuscitation training programme in Sichuan. This “train the trainers” programme sets out to reduce infant mortality due to birth asphyxia, by training birth attendants throughout Sichuan Province in simple, effective resuscitation techniques, and providing them with basic equipment.
Working with the Sichuan Provincial Health Bureau and the Sichuan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Heart to Heart hopes to establish 22 training centers and reach every county of Sichuan with this training by 2006. So far, ten of these training centers have been established and have trained over 2300 birth attendants from more than 670 hospitals.
Heart to Heart and the Hong Kong Society for the Blind (see separate entry) have together donated an operation vehicle, with health professionals from the Provincial People’s Hospital, to conduct cataracts operations. Up to now, more than 1000 people have benefited from the program to have their sights restored. Every May, Heart to Heart will organize some Amercian eye surgery experts to exchange with and also train on local doctors to make them capable of doing cataracts surgery independently. Support for this program also comes from the Federation of Disabled Person and local Red Cross branches.
The newly program is to invite some well-known American first aid experts to deliver training courses in Sichuan, collaborating with the Municipal 120 First Aid Centre and the Municipal Ninth People’s Hospital.
Heart to Heart International receives donations in kind from pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies, as well as private donations.
