Founded in 1976 in the United States, this organisation helps people in need of housing to build their homes through a mutual aid system.

The basic methodology is for families in selected communities to form savings groups, between them saving enough money to build one house. When the group has saved enough, Habitat for Humanity provides finance to build an additional two houses. The families then build the houses, with Habitat for Humanity providing technical guidance and bringing groups of international volunteers to assist in the construction. After the houses are complete, the families pay back the finance provided by Habitat for Humanity over a 5 year period.

Habitat established an office in Kunming, Yunnan in 2001. It has begun work in rural Yunnan in partnership with the provincial Poverty Alleviation Office and Disabled Persons Federation . So far, HFH China has built&renovate 186 houses in Yunnan.

As well as expanding its work in Yunnan, Habitat for Humanity expects soon to start operations in Guangxi and Guangdong, and to expand to other areas of China within three years.
