Born in Jiangsu Province in 1930, Cyrus Tang Zhongying emigrated to the United States in 1950 and made a fortune building a steel, scrap metal, office furniture and pharmaceutical empire. In the 1990s he created a family of three foundations: the Chung Ying Tan Foundation supports education, public health and civic participation projects in the United States; the Tang Foundation for the Research of Traditional Chinese Medicine supports research at the University of Chicago and at a research institute in Beijing; and the Cyrus Tang Foundation supports education in China.

The latter foundation began in 1997 with a scholarship fund to enable students from poor families to attend college or university. Students have to show strong academic ability and a willingness to themselves serve the wider community. By the end of 2004 the fund had provided scholarships for 2,200 students. The foundation also provides small grants for students to undertake special research projects.

Construction or renovation of rural primary schools is another major area of the foundation’s work. To date, 251 Cyrus Tang Foundation schools have been established in twelve provinces.

In addition to these regular programmes, the foundation donates equipment and funds for medical research in universities. A recent USD 5 million grant was made to Nanjing University for for laboratory facilities.

The foundation opened an office in Jiangsu in 2001. In 2004 it began a new pilot project, in one country of Jiangsu and one county in Shaanxi, to ‘ignite’ (薪火) rural education. This provides scholarships for children from poor families, offers vocational training to youngsters who have failed to qualify for college, and mobilises university student volunteers to run training programmes and educational activities in rural areas.
