Wetlands International was created in 1995 by a merger of three international wetland organizations. Its international secretariat in the Netherlands supports offices in 15 countries.

The WI-China Office was established to assist the Chinese government in policy making and to provide support for conservation and appropriate use of wetlands. The office has recently been involved in peatlands restoration and management initiatives in Sichuan and Gansu, integrated management of biodiversity, wetlands and river basins in Xinjiang, and the establishment of Lashihai High Plateau Wetland Nature Reserve in Yunnan.

As well as helping the Chinese government develop a National Wetland Conservation Action Plan, WI-China has formed a specialist network of around 50 wetland experts to promote the wise use and conservation for wetlands. Its Chinese language website provides access to information and specialist articles on websites, and the organization translates key international documents into Chinese, and key Chinese documents into English, as well as publishing a regular newsletter.

WI-China also actively contributes to an East Asia-Australasian Shorebird Reserve Network by conducting shorebird surveys and holding training courses.

In 2002, Wetlands International’s total income was around EUR 7 million. Most of this was provided in grants by government and multilateral agencies, foundations and other NGOS
