Activities in Other Countries:
Long term development programmes in India, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Vietnam. The ‘flying hospital’ has visited more than 80 countries worldwide.

Orbis International is renowned worldwide for its ‘flying hospitals’ – airplanes equipped with operating theatres -- which fly in to developing countries with a team of eye surgeons who perform operations for local patients.

In 1982, an Orbis plane made a first visit to Guangzhou. In the following few years, visits were made to several cities around China. In addition to performing surgeries, the Orbis surgeons gave surgical training aboard the jet, which is equipped classroom and audiovisual teaching facilities.

From 1999, the organization began longer term training programmes in China. It established an ophthalmic training centre in Taiyuan (Shanxi), and started community based eye-care programs in Sichuan. An initiative to combat childhood blindness also began in 1999. Two paediatric eye care centres are being built, in Yunnan and Xinjiang, two provinces with a high prevalence of childhood eye diseases.

In future Orbis will concentrate its efforts on preventive eye care in rural areas.

This organization is funded by individual and corporate donations, grants from foundations, and interest on endowed funds.
