Dating back to 1908, this is one of the world’s largest and best- known blindness prevention agencies, with member associations in ten countries of Europe, North America and Australia. It is a leading partner in a current, global campaign – “Vision 2020: The Right to Sight” – that brings together other international NGOs and the World Health Organisation in an effort to ensure that, by the year 2020 nobody should become blind due to of lack of medical care.
CBM has worked in China since 1987, in partnership with the Nanjing-based Amity Foundation, the China Disabled Person’s Federation and the Ministry of Public Health. A major activity has been training eye surgeons and other health care workers. This enables county level hospitals to perform operations to restore sight (especially by removing cataracts), and so makes surgery more accessible and affordable for rural people.
Other activities have included community based rehabilitation programmes in rural areas. Teams of community health workers provide outreach services such as eye screening and early diagnosis of eye problems, and “orientation and mobility” training for visually impaired people, enabling them to lead more fulfilled lives in their homes and communities. In Jiangsu and Yunnan provinces, CBM has also provided visually impaired people with vocational training and small business start-up loans, to help them become independent.
In Nanjing and Tianjin, CBM has worked with schools providing equipment and training specialist teachers to support the integration of children with visual impairments. CBM has also supported the Golden Key project, an independent Chinese initiative that promotes integrated education for visually impaired children, and publishes China’s only braille magazine for children.
