Established thirty years ago in the United States, Rare uses a mix of environmental education and social marketing techniques to bridge the gap between conservation scientists and ordinary people and to inspire public support for conservation initiatives. ‘Pride Campaigns’ are one of the organisation’s key techniques. The campaigns select and celebrate important local species to galvanise people’s pride in their local environment.
In Yunann, Rare is pursuing this strategy as part of the broader conservation programme of the The Nature Conservancy (See separate entry). The Golden Monkey and Golden Pheasant have been selected as subjects of a local Pride Campaign. Rare’s collaboration with The Nature Conservancy also extends to providing training for small ecotourism enterprises in Yunnan, in areas such as interpretative planning and nature guide training.
Rare is also starting to work with local communities in Sichuan’s Pengzhou County (彭州) and Baishuihe National Nature Reserve. Work in Sichuan is carried out in collaboration with Conservation International, and the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots programme. (See separate entries).
In 2006, RARE’s total income was USD 6.7 million USD. Individual supporters donated USD 4.5 million of this, while grants from foundations and corporations accounted for another USD 2.2 million.
