This US based organization was established in 1997 to assist the people of western Sichuan’s Ganzi Prefecture – a predominantly ethnic Tibetan area traditionally known in Tibetan as Kham.
The foundation’s first activity was a cultural preservation project to restore murals at Baiya Monastery. It has since sponsored a wide range of community development projects.
Scholarships have been given to more than 200 primary and secondary school students, and the foundations published and distributed free to primary and middle schools nine educational books, aimed at children and written in Tibetan. Small grants have also been made to selected schools for books, equipment, and essential repairs, and to renovate homes of teachers and doctors.
Other projects have included training for teachers and midwives; small loan programmes for building greenhouses; a local re-forestation project; donation of wheelchairs and donation of medical equipment and supplies to local clinics and hospitals.
Many of these projects have been implemented in partnership with the Ganzi Prefecture Women’s Federation and the Sichuan Disabled Persons Federation.
Approximately 40% of Kham Aid Foundation’s income is from individual donors, and 55% is provided in grants by other foundations.
