Set up in 1993, this UK-based organisation specialises in helping local groups in developing countries to respond to HIV/AIDS. It aims to make a significant contribution to HIV prevention and AIDS care by working with local community-based organisations, providing information, training and technical support, networking opportunities, and funding. The Alliance has so far carried out work of this kind in more than 40 countries.
The Alliance first visited China in 2001 to assess the HIV/AIDS situation and to identify potential partners. From the end of 2002, it began to work with community groups in Beijing. During 2003, it held several workshops in Sichuan, bringing together community groups and health professionals for participatory training in HIV/AIDS, and also to discuss strategies for involving community based organisations in prevention and care.
The Alliance is currently working in Sichuan and Yunnan to help the development of responses among communities affected by HIV/AIDS, including people living with HIV/AIDS. In Yunnan the Alliance’s work is partially funded by the United States Agency for International Development. In the future the Alliance aims to continue to contribute to HIV/AIDS prevention and care in China by promoting effective efforts at the community level.
As of 2007, in Sichuan they have supported the involvement of at risk groups in programmes designed to reduce rates of HIV transmission. A recent development in this province has been the start of a needle-exchange programme for intravenous drug users in Emei. They are also working with grassroots groups of people living with HIV/AIDS to support them in developing organizations to combat the stigma and discrimination associated with AIDS. In addition, support services for HIV positive women are also being established.
The HIV/AIDS Alliance is funded by grants from government donor agencies and by private donations.
