The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a U.S. environmental group with more than a million members and on-line supporters. NRDC campaigns in the United States for higher environmental standards and stronger legislation in areas such as water pollution, atmospheric emissions standards and energy efficiency.
In China, NRDC supports work to promote cleaner power generation, increase energy efficiency in buildings, reduce the environmental impacts of transport and improve environmental law and public participation systems. Its approach has been to develop demonstration projects that could become the touchstone for broader advocacy of environmental policy.
Ongoing projects include:
- ACCORD21 Demonstration Building - A 130,000 square foot office that houses China’s Agenda 21 administrative centre and other government departments working on sustainable development. The facility has been built to high energy and water efficiency standards and was certified by the LEED Standard. Visit the website: www.accord21.org
- Clean Power - Working with the Ministry of Construction they’ve helped develop energy efficient national and residential building standards.
- Clean Power – NRDC is active in advancing solutions to China’s energy problems. Specifically, they are promoting Demand-Side Management, Clean Coal technologies and carbon capture and storage.
- Sustainable Transportation – NRDC is working with local partners to support fuel cell vehicle demonstration and commercialization in China.
- Environmental Law and Public Participation – NRDC is working with Chinese environmental NGOs, lawyers and government to improve implementation and enforcement of environmental laws through public participation, public interest litigation and public education. Our work includes collaboration with Chinese partners on the drafting of national regulations on environmental public participation, capacity building trainings for NGOs, lawyers, judges and government officials, and the publication of briefings and collaborative research on difficult issues in environmental law and public participation.
NRDC’s funding comes from members’ donations, public fund-raising, and grants from private foundations.
