This membership association seeks to promote social work as a profession and enhance the capacities of those already involved in the field. In Hong Kong, the Association provides professional training to social workers in new social work theory and practice of social work. It is in the process of opening a social work academy to encourage social workers to pursue life long learning and improvement.
By mobilising book donations from individuals and universities throughout Hong Kong, the Association has helped the Pudong Social Workers Association in Shanghai to establish its own resource centre. The Hong Kong Association has also trained counterparts in Pudong in core social work competencies. HKSWA members have provided similar training, on a volunteer basis, to counterparts in other parts of China, notably Beijing and Xinjiang.
In addition, the Association arranges exchange visits and lecture programmes. Numerous mainland scholars and officials have been invited to Hong Kong to lecture on topics such as population policy, social policy planning, and marriage/child care ordinances. The Association has also coordinated student exchanges, with Hong Kong social work students visiting Hangzhou and Guizhou to observe social work service programs and to visit social planning offices.
The Hong Kong Social Worker’s Association is funded entirely through its membership fees. Regular members pay approximately HKD 100 per year, life members pay USD 5,000.
