Hong Kong Christian Service has been providing a wide range of social services in Hong Kong since 1952. It also links with universities in social welfare research and professional training for social workers.

The organisation’s first activity on the mainland was to facilitate a seminar on pre-school education held by Beijing University and the Beijing Early Childhood Education Association. Since then it has been involved in numerous initiatives to support social work and youth and community work training in China, and to help social work professionals develop their own working models on the mainland. This has recently included helping the Shanghai Pudong New Area Social Development bureau to develop social work programmes in the district. Also in Shanghai, the Service has recently worked closely with the Lequn Social Service Agency, providing consultancy and training to help the agency develop social services. In a longer-term programme, postgraduate students from Beijing University have been sponsored to attend one-month intensive training courses in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Christian Service’s work is supported by grants from the Hong Kong government, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Hong Kong Community Chest, as well as by service fees and private donations
