The ‘Living Values’ programme was developed in the 1990s by an international network of individual educators working in several countries. In 2004, an Association was formally established in Switzerland to serve as a common umbrella for activities worldwide.

The programme aims to promote approaches to education that emphasise values and the development of the whole person, rather than just academic achievement.

In 2000 it began collaborating with the Beijing Institute of Education. This led to a series of five-day training seminars for educators of teachers in kindergarten, primary and middle schools in Beijing, to assist them in creating values-based classroom learning environments. This led to the piloting of values-based teaching programmes in 70 Beijing schools. Meanwhile, Beijing Normal University Press published a complementary series of Living Values activities books for teachers, and training manuals for educators and parent facilitators. A DVD was made summarising the essential features of the training. Beijing educators have also participated in seminars and conferences in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

The programme has since begun to extend its network of implementing schools and educators to Shanghai, Shandong and Yunnan.

The Living Values programme is funded by private donations.
