Founded in 1984, this British organisation works to address the long-term health needs of communities in developing countries. Their work includes training health workers, promoting health education, providing basic medical equipment and building capacity at the provincial and county level.

In China over the last ten years Health Unlimited has worked with the Public Health Bureau of several provinces in maternal and child health (MCH) programmes. These set out to reduce maternal and child mortality by improving the health service providers’ capacity to prevent or treat conditions such as neonatal tetanus and asphyxia and post-partum haemorrhage.

Since 2001, a major project has been under way in Yunnan province, aiming to strengthen both maternal and child health care and prevention of infectious diseases in seven nationally designated poverty counties along the Mekong (Lancangjiang) river. Train-the-trainer workshops for health care professionals have covered eleven different aspects of health care, and thousands of manuals have been distributed to village level health workers. The project has also used a variety of media, including performance art, to deliver community health education messages in target villages.

2003 saw the start of another major MCH project, in five counties each of Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi.

In 2002, Health Unlimited’s total income was GBP 3.3 million. Of this, 38% was in grants from the British government Department for International Development, 31% from the European Union, and the rest was made up of donations from individuals and grants from private trusts and non government organizations. Work in China has been supported by grants from the European Union and from Christian Aid, another British NGO.
