Established in 1997, the Foundation has so far been mainly concentrated on developing a funding base and strategy for programme interventions. It has representatives in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and has so far drawn funding support mainly from the overseas Chinese community.
Early activities have included provision of scholarships for poor children in Ningxia to complete basic education; building of two primary schools in Gansu and refurbishment of a township hospital in southern Shanxi, and a November 1999 conference in Beijing (co-hosted with the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine and the Atlantic Council of America) on 'Chinese Health Tomorrow.' The organisation hopes to draw on the expertise of American public health professionals to strengthen service provision in rural China, and is exploring the possibility of a pilot Hepatitis B vaccination programme.
