Activities in Other Countries: Programmes have worldwide impact
Microsoft founder and President, Bill Gates, and his wife Melinda created this foundation in 2000. It is one of the world’s largest philanthropic institutions with an endowment of some USD 27 billion.
Based in Seattle, the foundation devotes part of its resources to community programmes in the northwest United States. It also supports equality of educational opportunity in the US by making grants to public libraries across the country to buy computers establish internet access, and by working with public high schools to improve the quality of education they offer. The largest, single grant in the foundation’s history was USD 1 billion to create a university scholarship fund for African American students.
However, more than half of the foundation’s resources are devoted to global health programmes. It has provided hundreds of millions of dollars for vaccine research and development and has contributed substantial sums to global public health campaigns: USD 754 million to a Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunisation; USD 100 million for a Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and USD 126 million for the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. (China receives assistance through all three programmes). American universities have also received grants to research and pilot improvements to public health programmes in developing countries: USD 60 million to Johns Hopkins University to work on reproductive health and a further USD 44 million for Tuberculosis Control; USD 56 million to Columbia University to work on maternal health. In addition, the foundation has made numerous grants to the World Health Organisation and American public health NGOs, including Family Health International and PATH (see separate entries).
Although the foundation does not have country programmes as such, it has made several grants for programmes that are partly or fully implemented in China. In addition to the global programmes already mentioned, the foundation has provided USD 2.9 million for the World Association of Children and Parents to work with orphaned and disabled children in Henan and USD 7.3 million for PATH to work on adolescent reproductive health and AIDS prevention. (see separate entries).
The foundation has net assets worth approximately USD 27 billion . In 2003, it made grants totalling USD 1.18 billion. Around 60% of total grant funds support international programmes.
