This organization has pioneered the concept of ‘social marketing’ of contraceptives, starting work in India in the early 1980s and opening a programme in China in 1995.
In this context, ‘social marketing’ means improving both distribution channels and the public image of contraceptives, and especially condoms, so that customers can acquire them more conveniently and without embarrassment. This is done not for commercial reasons, but to protect people (including unmarried but sexually active people) from unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS. Nevertheless, by developing quality products and markets, DKT works towards commercial viability, and therefore long term sustainability.
DKT markets its own brand of high quality condoms, through wholesaler networks that the organisation has established in targeted distribution areas with a high prevalence of risk of HIV/AIDS. Sales staff directly hired by DKT also serve remote, rural areas, where contraceptives are sold at a substantial discount. In 2003, DKT sold 43.3 million condoms in China and 116,567 injectable contraceptives.
To complement its supply and distribution of contraceptives, DKT works with print and broadcast media to promote awareness and prevention of AIDS. It has also organised outreach projects to take AIDS prevention (and condom promotion) messages to particular communities. For example, in Shanghai it created mobile displays and exhibitions for display in factories employing migrant workers.
DKT is now collaborating with the China Red Cross branches in Shanghai universities to produce a play, with AIDS prevention messages, that will tour college campuses.
DKT recovers much of its costs from sales of contraceptives. In addition, the China programme is subsidized by the organization’s international headquarters, whose income is derived from private donations.
