World Bank and International Monetary Fund professional staff and their families established this non-profit organisation in 2002 as an employee staff association. The society describes itself as a skill-sharing organisation with a strategy to link development finance with civil society actors, encouraging its own members to contribute their time and skills to community projects that cannot afford high consultancy fees. By promoting this kind of volunteering, and drawing on the expertise of its members, the society also hopes to improve the public perceptions of both the Bank and the Fund as poverty-focused institutions.

The China Development Marketplace, launched in June 2005, is the society’s largest current project. The Marketplace is a competitive small grant-making process that provides funding of up to USD 30,000 to 50 finalists and employs volunteers in a grant management role as project assessors and evaluators. Project partners include the State Council Leading Group Office for Poverty Reduction and Development and the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Other important work includes promoting private philanthropy in China and encouraging the development of laws that govern philanthropy. This is done by bringing together Chinese delegations with representatives of large US foundations in roundtable discussions and study visits.

Plans are laid for a student volunteer programme, which envisages each year sending up to ten students who are interested in pursuing a non profit career to study in the United States.

An existing youth exchange arranges placements for middle- and high-school children with US non-profit organisations.

Funding for the Society currently comes exclusively from the World Bank, although future plans involve attracting a greater proportion of finance from Foundations and other grant-giving bodies.
